In Alola, it was a way to assign those rare typings, especially Dark (where there were no actual Dark-types in Gen 1 outside of Mega Gyarados), retroactively to Gen 1 Pokemon.
Only six of the 18 regional variants in Alola were Dark-type, so it wasn't that bad. Dark has a healthy representation in Gen 1 now thanks to the Alolan forms.
For Galar, the only Galarian forms that are Dark-type are Zigzagoon and Linoone, with Obstagoon not even counting as a regional form since it is its own Pokemon. Psychic, Ice, Ghost, and Steel are much more egregious with the regional variants this time.

Galarian Corsola lost both Rock and Water because it is not even coral anymore; it is just a ghost. Corsola and Cursola's branches are not even corporeal.
