Honestly it has surprised me because I've seen a fair number of people who say stuff like "I'm not getting the new Pokemon game because I only care about competitive and Showdown can do that for me." It seems more like a direct competitor/threat to the Pokemon games than some of the stuff that's actually been killed by TCP.
My best guess is that they realize Showdown is used by a training tool by a lot of VGC players and they don't wanna piss off the fans who give enough of a shit to travel to tournaments & stream.
