The story isn't even good, and the games are only OK but some people swear it's the worst thing ever, hell, there are people in this board arguing the 7th Gen is worse than the 8th, despite the fact the 8th has half the content and only exacerbates the 7th's worst parts

In Alola, The plot stops until LIllie shows up and the Pokemon League (Arguably the PCs goal) feels like an afterthought
Plenty of games and shows have done this before but for many Pokemon only players it was seemingly sacrilege
Mind you, 3D Pokemon is a step down in many respects but the story has never been stellar, it was bland but inoffensive in the first 4 gens, and ranged too self Important and mouthy (5,6,7) to absolute dogshit (Sword and Shield, ORAS) in the last 4
