Doubles is the meta because it's faster, they don't want games going 100+ turns ever.

Gen 3 kinda did that since it introduced them, Emerald had a lot of chooseable double battles I believe.

that's the problem, it's been so long. they've added so much cool shit for doubles (flower gift, instruct, steely spirit, tailwind...) and yet the only doubles content there is in the main game is fucking "twins" battles where you fight two underleveled shitmons with helping hand. the only good double battles that weren't from gen 3 were the veteran couple at the end of alolan victory road and raihan (and even then his fucking team doesn't even synergize with sandstorm)
