The way to group them:

Less exploration, more one-off battle gimmicks to try and keep it fresh, additional handholding to make sure the player doesn't get lost

Gen 6 can't get lumped in with the second group, because the closest thing it has to optional exploration is Azure Bay and Terminus Cave

Never. They shall ever be the reference point to Pokemon's downfall. The worst part is, you can actually see a great game in there comparable to Gen 5. Gen 6 had so much wasted potential, it's heart breaking.

Agreed. I enjoyed every gen up until VI and what came after. Still haven't touched Sword and Shield since I know it's just a disappointment. The Kalos starters not getting megas along with players being handed a Kanto starter and each of them getting a Mega (or two) just says it all.

I never saw any huge problem with them. They all had their issues, but they were enjoyable, so i never had an "In Retrospect, X game was good!" moment. X/Y were actually pretty great 1st endeavors into a full-fledge 3D game and i was looking up to the moment when Gamefreak would fix their flaws and give us the best Pokemon game ever. Of course, that moment never came, and the already done models and animations only proved to be a crutch for Gamefreak that meant they would hardly ever have to raise a finger anymore, making their lazyness and incompetence even more palpable than before. The past 2 gens are the only ones i haven't enjoyed for that reason.

With Gen VI you could tell they were holding back in order to release a third version or so but didn't. ORAS came around instead and that was the actual point we started seeing the downfall. Then Gen VII came around and we were hit with shit after shit. ORAS was also the time Ohmori started directing games.

There's a lot of little titbits that allude to story elements that are dropped and unfulfilled expectations. The first 3rd of the game was setting up something far grander than what we got. The most obvious being the nonsensical character shift with Lysandre. It was like they simultaneously ran out of time and gave up on the game.

Kalos had an assload of potential after datamining was done and game events were uncovered. Gen 7's where they pretty much threw crap together and called it a day to where you even got a $40 DLC with a repeat of the first set.

Xy tried to be the new classic pokemon (last games to use the classic formula). It basically tried to be a gen 1-3 game in 3d.

But gfs incompotence resulted in wasted potential.

There was no wasted potential in Gen 7. You got exactly everything that could be offered. What did USUM do except make that obvious? XY were clearly unpolished games that never got their Emerald or Platinum.
