Yeah, compared to these, it's less millions. But is it bad on its own? As for whether these movies deserved it less than Detective Pikachu, I'm not sure. I didn't watch Ted or Jumanji WttJ, but I've heard good things about them. I only watched half of The Martian and it was pretty bland and boring, but I don't know if I would say it's worse than Detective Pikachu. The Smurfs was more or less on par. They're the exact same format of "WACKY talking creature with no-nonsense exasperated human! What CRAAAAAZINESS will happen next?!" shit. But of course The Smurfs did better because it's more western and also did that movie before Pokémon. IT has scary spooky clown, so of course it did well. I don't know what The Meg is.

The Meg is an awful Chinese shark movie, it was pretty bad. With that said though if Detective Pikachu was any other movie without the Pokemon IP then it would have done pretty good at these numbers but still notably less than other far worse animated kids films. Considering it WAS a Pokemon film then it ended up doing rather badly all things considered. Not horrible and it definately made profit but Pokemon always sells like hotcakes so these numbers aren't as impressive as the series would expect.

People can pretend that 'its pokemon, it'll sell!' all they want, but alot of media in the franchise actualy does perform weakly, because you really DO need to make something people want to see and buy. This movie was just boring

Pokemon as a brand is much more popular than The Smurfs.
People insisted it would break a billion just off name recognizition. It ended up grossing less than half that. Online discussion was also fucking dead after a week.

It's not just about breaking even. The time and effort spent making the movie could have been spent earning even more money in other ways. Even if they technically made more money than they spent, the opportunity is still wasted. Nintendo made a profit on the Wii U but it was still considered to be a failure because they could have made exponentially more money with a better console.

There were two cgi Japanese monster-based films in theaters ate the same time. Both under-performed because they split audiences/money.
Maybe if the studios weren't dumb and released them in different months, both may have succeeded.

The movie wasn't made entirely by GameFreak, nor did it put emphasis on capturing and battling Pokemon.

The problem is that the movie didn't play to it's strengths. It gave us this rich world with Pokémon and humans living life side by side and runs with it for about half of the movie. When the movie switches focus to the mystery solving (with a predictable outcome) and CGI heavy chase sequences in the second half it becomes much weaker.

Say what you will about the movie but don't act like the first act wasn't brilliant.
