another thing: unsusual strategies like freezing the whole battle field so the enemy mon has it tougher or using flame charge as eruption move after using dig.
the games won't let you get creative like that. so perhaps an active turn-based system with combining movesets that create new effects would be more interesting than the same old same old principle.
Following the lives of Jessie and James is also really fun. They are the only characters that aren't one-dimensional. Because most game characters are usually far worse.
