These little fellas carried my Shield run after I got em. No Retreat, CC, Smart Strike and Megahorn and they pretty much beat up everything.
Don't think they're high up on my favorites, probably not even in the Top 20, but I do like em.
Been playing since Gen 5 technically, but I really got into Pokemon back during the Gen 3 anime. My dad never allowed me to play the games out of fear of me becoming obsessed with them, so I didn't get to play them until I was old enough to buy my own copy.

Just got it for Christmas, just got to the wild area, currently have Grookey, Rookidee and Arrowkuda. Is it worth trying some raids or am I gonna get shat on? Should I just head to Motostoke?

I'm ending the game with Flapple, Cinderace, Corviknight, Grimmsnarl, Arctozolt and Gastrodon and I'm really happy with my team this time around, they're all bros. Arctozolt and Flapple are way cuter than I thought they'd be and Grimmsnarl grew on me.

I don't think any of the Gen 8 mon would make my all time favs, but it feels like a good selection this time around. Having said that, SwSh is absolutely still an unfinished, rushed, steaming pile of shit

I did raids around that point, they scale to your level so you should be fine. The Wild Area is pretty much the only portion of the game with any substantial content in it, so I'd suggest spending as much time there as you want.
Cause the second you don't. the game's pacing falls to shit and it's over before it even starts.

If you do online raids the other plays will probably just one-shot the mons for you. It's worth exploring the wild area a bit and building a team, but deeper in the wild area things will be a much higher level than you

Do raids but don't use the candies until you finish the game. Be wary of wild Pokemon (usually evolved) walking/flying around on their own away from tall grass, they will outlevel you by a significant margin and could shit all over you by not letting you run. Even some Pokemon in the grass will significantly outlevel you if you go too deep in. Also anything that says "very strong looking" when you start the battle cannot be captured yet, so don't even try.

Barraskewda is top 10 for me. I had seen Arrocuda with Cramorants reveal and had been wondering about it since. The very first fishing spot in swsh is near the professors lab and you can see arrocuda swimming in the overworld but have no way of accessing them. I assumed and hoped that I could keep fishing in the spot and hopefully catch one but the first 20-30 I tried were all magikarp. Eventually I did catch an arrocuda and it was one of the most powerful Pokémon on my team; I even ended up boxing sobble when it evolved.

It’s also usable in competitive which is just fun.

Coalossal, Perrserker, Appletun, Inteleon and Obstagoon have all joined my favorites after using them across the game. I like a good number of monsters in this gen, but those were the "stand outs" that I ended up carrying all the way to the Battle Tower. I'm actualy right now trying to find a way to use all of them competitively. Inteleon, Appletun and Obstagoon are being well used in my team online but I'm not so sure how to make use of the other two, nor what nature to breed for them.

Hatterene, corviknight, grimmsnarl, and swordwolf were my faves this gen. They've all entered top 20ish but swordwolf is sadly an uber which means it's not really able to be used in a playthrough which really sucks. Hatterene may be my favorite and crack in at 7 or 8 though because I love the pokedex entry and her animations in camp and going from a derpy little blob to a calm and collected ojou type. I named her Bell after the Bell Witch. However, it's hard to admit all this because pokefuckers have nearly ruined her like everything else.

Been playing RBY. KAAAAANTOOOOOOO.

Sandaconda, Thievul, Boltund, Coalossal, Appletun, and Copperajah are my champion team; all great, but Coalossal turned out to be an unexpected bro - always taking the win whenever everyone else was exhausted - whilst Sandaconda was the one I wanted to use most and he did just fine.

Nothing has shifted into my top 6 (for posterity, being Murkrow, Kommo-o, Serperior, Dragalge, Heliolisk, and Gliscor), but Sandaconda and Copperajah definitely have become amongst my favourites overall - certainly top 15 if not 10. Was hoping for a lot more from Thievul and Appletun, on the other hand.

Randomly found a shiny Polteageist, which became my favorite Pokemon for this run.

Other favorites include Drednaw, Dragapult and the Galar regional variants. I like none of the starters though, Cinderace is mostly ok.

Been a fan since RBY.

Obstagoon, Copperajah and Perrserker are all really good. I like most of the new Pokémon and I had to make some hars choices like between Raj or Perrserker, Orbeetle or Centiscorch and Alcremie or Hattarene.

Same. Playing Shield right now. I spent about 7 hours in the Wild Area and farmed a lot of candies. If you got to the Wild Area, it is very possible for you to beat some of the 1-star raids. (At this point in the game, you can only do 1-star raids. You don't get 2-stars until after you beat Milo iirc.)

By doing the non-event raids, you expand your Pokemon roster and you can attempt raids of different types your Pokemon are not suited for, such as Dragon- or Ice-types. Wild Area is a godsend, especially with the raids. Already caught Galarian Mr. Mime, a Togekiss that evolved from a Togepi, and three Gigantamax Butterfree out of the deal. You can also farm a lot of candies.

You can even access the northern half of the Wild Area and attempt some of the stuff there, such as breeding. Already bred my starter and a few Pokemon, and starting the game with this hatched roster instead of my overpowered original roster.

If you want to head to Motostoke, that's fine, too. I'll do that for my Sword playthrough.

I enjoy Cinderace, I love this bunny and I really hope they release one with Protean 2.0 ability soon for more funs. Even like its shiny colors more than regular colors too.
The unexpected bros of this gen are Corviknight and Orbeetle, they survive lots of attacks. Especially the latter, after Alola dex I really miss when pokemon were faster. I usually don't have a bug pokemon for my favorites but Orbeetle do made it in.

Also if you're worried about the "you can't catch this Pokemon" thing just ignore the huge Pokemon like Onix and Pokemon that are already evolved wandering around on the overworld, everything else before the Motostoke bridge is catchable except for the Giant's Seat area which has higher levelled stuff for some reason.
