I feel like this franchise has been losing many many. Forums are dying for example, and so is /vp/: /wfg/ is a graveyard.
If the games aren't good enough, kids of today will hardly stick with them, meaning there is no turnover in the hardcore community.
My 10 years old cousin said S/S is a bag of trash, for example. We liked pokémon as children because not only the games themselves were indeed more fleshed out (not even saying more polished, but at least they didn't feel as hollow as today) but also because we were in the past, indeed. Pokemon never changed its gameplay for 20 years, if for we kids it was alright 20-15 years ago, it doesn't mean it is alright for kids now. Kids perceive pokemon gameplay is completely obsolete. They may start with the games for trying them for the name popularity alone, but they will hardly stick with them later, because they have thousands of better options.
After this, they will be replaced by the next generation of kids, sure and the cycle goes on, but none of these will become hardcore.
Hardcore fans right now are only the old fans, because the franchise doesn't have the power to fidelize new players anymore, and old fans are leaving. Hence, hardcore community is dying.
