If you're running trick room you don't invest in speed so you invest in hp and or defenses.

I ran like 20 matches with hatterene leading and not once was she unable to pull trick room off, I think only once or twice did she die the following turn.

Skarmory also had a massive 140 defense stat to back its HP, the best defensive typing in the game, was immune to earthquake despite being steel, had a shit load of hazards to play with, and most of all got reliable recovery.
Skarmory was in OU for as long as Tyranitar.
