Play the ones that interest you in release order.
While the the story/character quality varies, overall the gameplay improves.
Only one that is a complete and total wreck and should be avoided is the DS one

It's never too late to play them. You should start with either Rescue Team or Explorers of Sky. RT is the first one and EoS is the best one. Don't start with Gates to Infinity or Super. GTI isn't as good as the others but is still worth playing if you end up liking the series. Super is great but has a bunch of cameos and references to the other games that you wouldn't understand if you play it first.

Wow, I must've missed them all. If it's in the postgame I may have missed a bunch, but Super is the only one I didn't feel like playing the postgame in; didn't even touch GTI

I did some shit to region unlock them for that exploration pack that's floating around, but it doesn't change the fact that the game's unreadable. Not to mention apparently the game's worse than Gates.
