The meta is back slidding with the inclusion of swsh anyway. And you're right, arena trap is akin to magnet pull where only certain mon a get trapped. I guess the problem is it's too specific, like shadow tag being reverse magnet pull.

Species clause is due so many mons being superior in a niche with the same typing.

For example why use a Flareon when you have Arcanine. Why use Vileplume when Venusaur is literally better. Why use Meowstic over Gardevor. Species clause prevents certain pokemon from being zero used due to being outcompeted in their niche.

I only disliked rocks because it arbitrarily made certain types like bug, ice, and fire worse just due to them existing. Heavy duty boots is one of the few good things game fuck added this gen.

In addition to not being nearly as good in general, Alolan Golem also can't check Ferrothorn nearly as well because it can't OHKO Ferro (unless it's Banded, which makes it even worse against everything other than Ferro) and if it switches into any attack or Leech Seed it'll get KO'd by Power Whip the following turn.

Basically it removes prominent stall breaker and wall break examples include heatran , mega mawhile. Without these stall breaker or wall breaker you would instantly lose as the stall player can just infinitely pivot and win.

They don't really need to be steel type, or even weak to ground.
As long as they're 2HKOd by sash dugtrio they'll be victims of trapping.
