I don't get how people can defend GSC's postgame. At least HGSS increased everyones levels and you can battle the E4 and gym leaders again with upgraded parties

GSC's postgame is just a small empty region

Nostalgia. Really the game is fun but you can’t excuse the poor level curve. The Battle Tower is there to make up for it but fuck the RNG.

you have to keep in mind that relative to handheld games available at the time, this was a huge amount of content. it's of course the case that nowadays a top down pixel art game could literally have as much content as a dev feels like putting the time in to implement, but on a handheld at the close of the 90s the existence of a second region, even in its relatively empty state, was a huge bonus to the game

said a lore decision rather than a balance decision. playing through kanto the first time in silver makes you really feel like the champion visiting a foreign region where everyone should, as expected, be weaker than you. this is actually one of my problems with a lot of modern rpgs in general that scale npc levels to your character - there is a point at which you should be way, way more powerful than almost everything around you, and that should be reflected in the degree to which you stomp other characters. in that sense, gen 2 got it right - but I do think gym leaders, certainly, should've been a little more difficult
gsc are nowhere near perfect games for lots of reasons but I don't think the postgame level curve is even one of its biggest flaws, and the relative emptiness of kanto has to be understood as a technical limitation more than anything. I'm actually more upset that hgss, which could've done much more with kanto, didn't deign to give us the entire silph co building, for example

it's not fun to take your level 45-50 party to kanto only to battle a bunch of level 20 pokemon

also there's a 20+ level difference between Blue and Red, so you'll have to grind a lot and there's no good grinding spots

I just explained why I prefer when rpgs are designed like that, though. it's better in rpgs that aren't turn based to be fair but stomping scrub tier competition when you're a literal regional champion feels more fitting to me - it's an immersion thing. if a route 1 trainer in viridian forest presents a serious challenge to my champion level team, it just feels out of place
that doesn't mean postgame shouldn't have any challenge whatsoever, though, I think my ideal kanto postgame would've expanded on the team rocket storyline and the player would've had to contend with their "crack team" of grunts throughout the postgame. that'd be more compelling to me. I like an in-universe explanation for why the enemies I'm facing are actually strong

I mean this sorta sucks but you can also definitely beat red without grinding, his team's not that good

Well, you have to remember that they wasted enough development time creating the beta concept for gen 2, scrap all of it and restart from zero, no wonder why kanto is bare bones.

You’re stuck with using up the Kanto trainers and take note their Pokemon are low leveled or wild grass where the Pokémon are even weaker. Training is tedious as fuck.

Modern? Try every RPG that ever tried level scaling. It always comes down to the same three issues:
>Enemy scale better than the player making leveling pointless and exploits or story progress the only way good way to get more powerful. It also severely limits what the player can mess around with because some characters, weapons, spells etc. become completely unusable
>Everything scales the same. Then there's no point in doing anything extra because the enemy jumps to your level and again exploits tend to be the only way to make player get better
>Enemies scale worse. No challenge in the game and just like point 2 it makes doing anything extra pretty

Gym leaders use different teams depending on the skill level of their challenger. Against the champion they would use their strongest team which lore wise can be as strong as the elite four
