We miss interacting woth our own pokemon rather than shitty rentals or dumb vehicles, not HMs per see
Perfect game would allow you to ride your pokemon without wasting a move slot

There's nothing wrong character being dedicated to field moves and being a shitty 3rd wheel in battle. Those field moves just have to be really good enough to justify it. I bet if your shitty HM slave let you heal while walking, gave the rest of your party extra Exp in battle, let you run twice as fast, and gave you free items while walking not a single one of you would care about giving up that team slot.

HM's helped with player engagement in the game since you were actively using your pokemon to explore the environment, the only real issues with it were when it got obnoxious with what you had to carry with you.

You should be able to use ur mon's move creatively, by burning down trees, using icebeam to make bridges over water. HM is fucking awful design and SW/SH finally giving us corvi taxes was unironically a good thing.

You weren't actively using your Pokemon though you were actively using some shitmon you would box as soon as the HM isn't necessary. There is no reason HMs should have ever taken up a moveslot.

Whoever decided in 2/3/4 that there should be multiple water HMs necessary for game progression should have been shot.

Honestly rather than an attack I would make them skills that your Pokemon can do naturally. You just need to make so that only flying Pokemon with a size x can be able to fly you around and a water Pokemon with size x can carry you, forcing players to evolve or capture a wide range of Pokemon that they can switch.

Opening the pc to take out a shitmon just to get past an arbitrary thing and then box it again isn't cool.

And yes, being able to solve a problem in different ways would be actual good game design, but gamefreak is never going to do that, so asking for HMs back is incredibly retarded.
