the point of the game was to see how far they could lower the bar before people stopped buying. the results proved that literally all they have to do is put pikachu, charizard and catching mechanics in the game to get their guaranteed sales.

SwSh is not any easier than any of the other games you'd consider 'not mindless' though. I played Diamond Pearl when I was 15 and plowed thru it quickly, so quickly I didn't even remember the team of most trainers in that game after I was done, yet there are people in this board that for whatever made reason claim 'DUDE cynthia was HARD scrub-filter for sure!', so it's clear that Pokemon games are only "hard" for young kids still learning mechanics and match-ups.
