That’s more than they usually have, and yet it’s still shit. They really need to get more studios on board, expand Gamefreak or drop the yearly release schedule if these games are going to not suck. But we all know neither of those three options will ever happen, so TPC and Gamefreak will continually put out shittier and shittier games as time goes on. I doubt the games will ever stop making money, but even if they got so shit that they started losing money they still won’t change things because they’re stubborn and retarded.

Honestly why the fuck do they rush the games' development? They sell millions so it's not like they're not getting any money from the games. What's stopping them from having a full 3-5 year development cycle?

Because they stand to make more money by putting out more games, that’s literally it. Why put out 1 game that sells 25 million copies in 3 years when you can put out 3 games that sell 15 million copies each in 3 years? Very few people within Gamefreak or TPC care about making good games, the few that do care aren’t the ones that make decisions on what games are made and what resources they get.

Merchandise and anime

Those are bigger moneymakers than the games, but they need the games out in order for TPC to be able to sell/air them.

Multimedia stuff. The games are where new designs debut, and after that they start appearing in other media within the franchise. The big shots want more designs for more merchandising, so games have to happen more frequently. More frequent releases are also more profitable on their own even without the multimedia stuff, see >>42200056

New toys come out all the time. While a major new game only comes out once every 3 years.

Compared to the anime, which gets a new episode every week, and new merchandise coming out every day, the release schedule of the games is very slow.

Plus it costs far less to produce a ton of plush toys than it costs to develop software and produce the cartridges it’s sold in, and for licensed plush toys (like Beanie Babies and Pokémon) some of them can cost quite a bit despite how cheaply they’re made. Plus if an older kid is into Pokémon then plush toys are good investments for their jealous younger siblings, and in places where game consoles are too expensive toys are still the big seller. They have a broader appeal than games.

e.g. a switch gets cut by ~30 dollars or so, or maybe comes with an extra free 30 dollar gift card. that also incentivizes you to buy the new stuff like swoshi that isnt discounted, cuz a switch without games is pretty useless.

That’s probably GameFreak’s decision. If anyone else was still allowed to make Pokémon games more substantial than shovelware then GF would be outed as the shit developers they are. By exercising their 34% ownership of the IP, they’ve made it so that fewer games like Mystery Dungeon, Ranger or Pokken are being made so as to hide their own incompetency.

My 3 year old nephew absolutely loves Pokemon right now. But he's really not old enough to have the patience for the games. Still, he absolutely loves the toys and various encyclopedia books. I imagine there's a lot of kids like him asking their parents to buy them merch.

both of those things existed when gold/silver and diamond/pearl got delayed. the anime is actually easier to work around now since it's no longer exclusively tied to the newest region.
the only thing stopping pokemon from having longer development cycles is consumers with no standards. they have no incentive to work harder, expand or invest more in the games when swsh is selling like crazy.
