My big problem with the fossils is that they tried to make it as obvious as possible that they're mismatched, so the base creatures are all bright primary colors with clear points of seperation. If they all had some sort of general cohesive design, they wouldn't look so gross when matched together.
Just make them all brown or something and they look a lot better.
