What it lacked in silly minigames (that got their own separate game anyway) it made up by having even more battle modes, which is what the game IS about.
It was also the first pokemon game to feature trainer customization, even if it was stupidly grindy. The only thing I actually bemoan is that it didn't receive an update to include Platinum and HG/SS content (was it even possible on Wii? Even bug patches were very convoluted) or a sequel for gen 5.
This was the last time we had good-looking 3D battles with proper scaling and a semblance of physical contact as well as not glacially-paced end of turn effects, and it wasn't even in the HD era yet. I miss it.
