If you create a desire to collect, people will want to collect the rarest stuff. Now to be fair, I feel like a lot of people will just do mindless shiny grinding in the background while doing something else so it's not too big of a waste of time. In SM I would spend an hour stockpiling eggs while watching TV after work, then throw eggs in the pokepelago to hatch overnight, then the next day at work I would spend my 30 minute lunch break hatching eggs while eating and watching Netflix on my phone. Got tons of shinies without spending too much time
