Maybe you "sync" with your Pokemon and they get some effect, like Charizard getting black stripes and some aura shit coming out of its eyes, like the TF2 killstreaks, and while in this totally not mega evolution state it has a boost of sorts. It'd literally be a simply aesthetic change, like I don't know, Typhlosion's flames turning blue and having hexagons randomly on his body. The models would stay exactly the same but with these new body patterns it would be enough to make new plushies. Maybe your trainer's hair changes color as well to match your Pokemon's boosted mode.
Leavanny's scythes things turning orange, Pikachu's tail glowing purple, shit like that.
