What the fuck is the point of dark typing? Unlike any of the other types, it literally just means a pokemon or move with it is edgy with dark coloration/highlights. Prove me wrong.

Dark means "to fight dirty". It's the opposite of Fighting which is "to fight with honor".

Dark was made to balance how broken Psychic was, even though Psychic was only so good in Gen 1 because Bug and Ghost were complete trash, Ghost didn't work properly even if it had been given good moves in Gen 1, and they kept sticking Bug and Ghost with Poison, which was weak to Psychic. Flavor-wise, Dark is about malevolence and fighting dirty.

Murkrow was retconned to be a mobster, and there's nothing occult about hyenas or dogs.

Sneasel is based on a yokai, but that's represented through its Ice typing. In the context of Pokemon, it's just a sneaky cat/weasel thing with ice powers.

"Occult" is Ghost type. Ghost type is shadows/darkness too. All of the moves actually related to shadows are Ghost type, while Dark type is either dirty fighting or dark energy. Not darkness, just dark energy.

Poison is just a status condition and not a type, most Poison types become Dark, like in the TCG

Bug also shouldn't be type; Drapion, Fygon, and Lurantis has proven that insect Pokemon can fit just fine into other types

Now that I think about having Poison, Ghost, AND Dark is overkill. Poison is usually only an element in lieu of a darkness element, not in conjunction with it. And I suppose that kind of was the intention in Gen 1; nothing about Zubat or Golbat's RGBY Pokedex or movepool suggested they were poisonous.

Gengar couldn't do anything with its Ghost typing in Gen 1 besides nosell Normal-type moves (which is a pretty deal) and the irrelevant Fighting-type (not so much). In Gen 2, it and Misdreavus still couldn't do much because its Attack was crap and Ghost for some unfathomable reason was physical, and the only relevant Fighting-type move was Cross Chop, which was only really used by Machamp.
