Gen 4 had the best everything except gameplay speed. While I like Gen 5, 493 is the perfect number of Pokémon: most all of everyone’s favorites are viable somewhere.

This. Most people don't realize the split didn't help shitmons at all. Just made the strong stronger. Gen 4 was the start of oppressive powercreep, and while I miss early gen 4/ PBR meta, let's not pretend Platinum didn't fuck everything up with Outrage and Garchomp.

Personally i think that separating special stat was a mistake. It doomed great pokemon such as uhhh, lapras, slowbro, special gyarados, chansey and alakazam, while making pokemon like snorlax extremly hard to play against. It didn't even help shitmons at all and started a powercreep in gen 2 and 3.

The split did help some shitmons, but for some of them it took more time for it to really kick in for them. If anything, blame the increase of spammable high BP moves. It's not like Gens 4 and up would become better metas without the split.

No, most types really needed the split and the new moves. Grass didn’t have a non signature move above 60 power. And Garchomp had Outrage as an egg move already.
