While Ash treats his mons as friends, Paul acts more like a coach for a sports team. Paul expects them to keep up, and in turn, the mons expect to get stronger while training with Paul. When they aren't able to keep up, they get cut just like an underperforming team member would in real life. When they aren't training, Paul actually treats his Pokémon very well, and his Pokémon (even Chimchar) were clearly shown to like having Paul as a trainer. While much harsher than Ash, there's nothing really wrong with how Paul trains his Pokémon as long as the Pokémon aren't there against their will, and I appreciate the fact that the anime didn't take the easy route of making Paul learn the error of his ways. Ash and Paul still don't agree with each other's training methods, but they still learned to respect each other by the end
