I subscribe to the theory that the "Pokemon Master" title is just a lifetime achievement award in the field of Pokemon battles. There is no set criteria beyond achieving enough to be recognized by whoever hands it out.

I'm pretty sure that Pokemon Master used to be used interchangeable with Champion. It only got retconned to be something ambiguous after it was clear that Pokemon as a franchise was going to continue for decades and that there were leagues and champions outside of Kanto.

Because it doesn't have a subtitle, so they just use the gen 8 game titles to signify that it's the gen 8 anime.

The new series has no subtitle like "Diamond & Pearl" or "Sun & Moon". It's just called "Pokemon".

In movie and episode 6 of the new series, Ash said that being a pokémon master was something much bigger than simply being the strongest trainer

even if he became the strongest trainer in history, he still wouldn't be the pokemon master
