XY were the last games where they actually tried. They added so many cool things and they are alright games to consider they lack a third version or anything like that.
>Trainer Customization
>Rideable Pokemon
>Worldwide launchs/Multilanguage
>Mega Evolution
>Pokemon interaction
>PSS
>Horde Battles
>Super Training/In-game EVs
>Roller Skaters
>Trainer Video
>Friend Safari
>Inverse Battles
>Postgame Episode
All began in Kalos. They also kept some great things like:
>Triple/Rotation Battles
>National Dex
>Customizable dialogue boxes/PC Boxes
>Roaming Pokemon
>Poke Radar
Sure, they had some things that sucked, especially the story and the characters (although they added friends, not rivals, which many people keep confusing), but the region and the Pokemon were amazing. They also pandered a lot to Kanto, especially with things like the starters and legendaries, but they also pandered other regions like Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova quite a lot. Also, it was gen V (despite being amazing games) which started some bad trendings for the series like linear regions, major focus on story instead of exploration, important trainers with fixed amount of Pokemon, lack of minigames or Battle Frontier, and lesser connecttion with other regions.
Overall, XY were pretty good first versions, but kinda empty compared to things like Platinum, BW2 or HGSS. They are still fun to play and amazing for Nuzlockes and monotypes. Also, it's funny how it's regional dex is larger than the one in Sword and Shield, including non-released mons.
