Honestly, I'm not convinced that Pikachu is even a rodent with the way they designed it, even if it took inspiration from them. Its utter lack of the incisor teeth that define the real-life order takes away major points, so I just look at it as an ambiguous monster. It is just so very much unlike any rodent that I just can't seriously associate it with them.
