>>42289776>>42289912Arguing the definitions of video game genres is a dumb idea because they're poorly defined and always boil down to arguing semantics. "Role-Playing Game" taken at face value will only ever mean a game where you role-play, which of course Zelda fits the mold of. Of course when most people say "RPG" they usually mean stats and levels and other features mostly inherent in the genre's history.
This gets even worse when you get to stupid fucking discussions like whether Dark Souls is a Western RPG or a Japanese RPG, due to having more traits reminiscent of the former (single create your own character, close-up third person person camera, gothic setting, etc.) and less of the latter (party-based, pre-made story characters and traditional XP/levels, etc.) despite Dark Souls of course literally being a Japanese RPG and not a Western RPG.
Anyway long-winded but I'm trying to say it's pointless to argue as there's very little hard definitions that people can agree on.
