if those games are the "best" in the series why they sold like shit?
hell, even SwSh (the "worst" games ever) sold 6x more than BW2 in their first week.

Besides the particular controversy surrounding Gen 5, the DS era always felt like a time when people thought it was "cool" to hate Pokemon, and that's because it came after Gen 3, where Pokemania was dying out.
Nowadays, a lot of these older fans are more mature and because of nostalgia, are jumping back into the franchise. Sadly, this rekindled love coincides with the Kanto pandering and barebones content philosophy that started in Gen 6.

It released during the "down" period of Pokemon between Gens 3-5. It also released well into the 3DS's lifespan and people really wanted Pokemon to move to 3D already.

Pokemon going 3D with X/Y and Pokemon Go made Pokemon "cool" again.
