>>42345465Star wars set up the same model pokemon used. It wasn't anything exceptional and was a fad much like any other.
The reason pokemon got big was a huge marketing campaign and the Gameboy being so big. You were entering the peak of the jrpg SNES era and then you had these cool creatures on the most popular system. It fell right into a perfect storm where people wanted to explore RPGs and pokemon have them all a favourite they could cling to and compete with each other with.
go then did a very similar thing where it got heavily marketed and appeared at just the right summer to take off. People who grew up with the series for pulled into it and smart phone technology was cheap enough for parents to give their kids smart devices to play it on.
Pokemon died after gsc but also gsc was dwindling in interest. The PlayStation became the cool console the Gameboy used to be and the n64 flopped around like a wet fish if it wasn't Mario 64 or kart. no amount of autistic collectathons could save it. The people who thought pokemon was cool moves onto final fantasy and the concept wasn't novel any more. The lack of trading between generations wasn't a big deal to most people. They don't take the same team through out the whole series they want to see new stuff.
Fads don't last as long now and information is less valuable. Pokemon lived and got so big for some of the same reasons mortal Kombat did. If every kid is whispering rumours of Pokemon then people get interested and chase it up. When the internet tells you everything from data miners day one who gives a fuck? Just Google what level machoke evolves at and be done with it. The magic of computer game secrets is dead, there's no longer any mystery in discovering the Dex, we just Google it. No mystery, no rumours, fads dead next thing to consume
