They could have the worst games but the Pokemon themselves (including gen 8) are better designs than other monster series. That monster is dull edgy shit, no SOUL.

The designs aren't better. Pokemon designs just have a simplistic, universal appeal. Yo-Kai is way too Japanese to be universally appealing, but if you're into Japanese folklore, I don't see why you wouldn't like them

The Pokemon don't feel scary anymore since they have no event or side story associated with them.
Darkrai for example had a creepy event back in DPP.
Which is why they don't feel intimidating anymore.
The anime is an exception, since Mimikyu seems to have a scary appearance in it, but otherwise is mostly just a Pikachu clone. It's more cute than scary.
