Why is Donphan so underrated?

It's not used by any trainers in Johto or Hoenn in the games and does not have any specific ground type user that uses it as well. Why is Donphan so unloved?Does /vp/ like it?

Despite it being an all around good mon it might be so you had to trade to get one back in GSC and with Ruby I don't know. It's a ground type Magma could've used and it might be because it's a safari zone pokemon, very few if any of those directly appear in the main game. Exceptions being Pikachu and Wobbuffet.

Eventually I caught one and evolved it. Unfortunately I hated Donphan's design and immediately boxed it.

Glad to see another donphan lover. Donphan is probably one of the most solid designs in the series. It was even pretty useful on my team back during the XY metagame.

Absolute shite movepool but it can tank a hit really well.
Also doesn't get one shot like most other ground types you find in the game by a grass/water move.
Defense Curl + Rollout combo killed Lance once I got rid of that pesky Dragonite with Blizzard.
