He’s not, he got put in Pokkén over the other two. He’s far and away the most popular in Japan. In the West, Infernape is the most popular, followed by Empoleon. Torterra is the real loser, no one likes it. Ash’s one jobbing in every battle since it evolved doesn’t help.

The piplup in the anime was a little shit, Empoleon has a crooked beak, can be beaten by both starters rather easily, it needs breeding to make it comp viable and people like turtles and flaming shit throwing chimps (Which I love alot) more than a bird based on a Greek god and Bonaparte.

Gen 3 and Gen 4 have starters that are all nearly equal in popularity. With that said, Empoleon's biggest issue is probably that Piplup basically became the cute mascot of Gen IV (and Lucario was to cool mascot) which undercut some of Empoleon's presence.

Cool typing, but it never really had stats made it shine. Also it's design isn't anything amazing. Infernape had really good stats, of course good typing, and a decent design, maybe just a little better than empoleon. Torterra has a great movepool, good all around stats, and a really cool design. It's type is its only downside, grass rock would've been stronger.
But on the whole, empoleon just missed a base or two that the other two touched well.

If youve paid attention to competitive viability, Empoleon and Infernape consistently flew between OU and UU. In inernapes case its for being good Blaziken while Empoleon was bulky and could set up stealth rocks

I like torterras design alot but its shit out of luck. X4 weakness to ice and not even the bulk to survive it is god awful.

Honestly my least favorite gen for starters, empoleon has a cool theme and typing but is ultimately less useful, Torterra is slow and awful but appeals to people who still want Pokemon to be monsters and Infernape appeals to the son goku audience. I'd pick empoleon over the others but I wish he could use swords dance better

I don't understand why they made him so fat/thick looking when canonically he can swim as fast as a jet. Why not make him look more clean, sleek/skinny? Especially in the anime he's even fatter than in the games

If anything drill peck is it because its kinda uncommon, even among flying types but none of the gen4 starters have "signature" moves. Feels like they sort of skipped that until Gen 7. (They gave the gen 6's to other pokemon almost immediately lol)

Torterra is literally the worst one viably though
If you want hyper offense you pick Infernape, if you want bulky offense or defensive utility you pick Empoleon, meanwhile Torterra maybe gets one earthquake off and dies to a single ice attack

He's always been my favorite Sinnoh Starter, though I love all three. Comp-wise he may be shit but he's excellent in-game, with a lot of bulk and defense, good attack and powerful physical moves, and two ways to heal itself.
