They aren’t actual gym leaders

They are training in the DLC to hopefully become Gym Leaders

They aren’t only by technicality. They just don’t have gyms yet. And it makes sense that the Champion of the region’s new rivals are Gym Leaders, just like Leon and Raihan

I fucking hope so. Gen VII got so close to perfection by having a type specialist of (almost) every type, Gen VIII has a golden opportunity to improve upon that with the DLC.

Only some of the gym leaders resemble their actual main, so it makes you wonder if these 2 will at all
Only the girl does with her butterfly bow that some speculate to be Dustox but again, look at Opal, who doesn’t actually resemble anyone

Not Dragon even though you have a Trial
Poison and Bug are part of Team Skull and not part of the island challenge
Some other one I can’t remember off the top of my head

There are uniforms for every type in the game even though there aren't gym leaders tied to them.
Klara and Avery show that they aren't adverse to taking those unused outfit and retrofiting a type-specialist character into them.

There's Faba in Sun/Moon but even if he's technically got a mono type psychic team, he doesn't even have a Z Crystal, so I didn't really count him among the trial-captains and trial-captain equivalents like Guzma and Plumeria.
