I find Meganium good for main game because of the level curve. Don't have to grind with Meganium, it can poison Dragonite and tank its Outrage, then heal every turn waiting for Dragonite to kill itself.

Typholysion is stuck using flame wheel and normal attacks/tpunch for the whole game. If you feel gutsy you may run iron tail but at that point its more worth raising a steelix or grinding a skarmory for steel moves. Pokemon in the end is not about just usibg your starter, that is why being too harsh on them is silly but I do find it ironic that both Feraligator and Typholysion get a pass in the matter because they are not gay grass types.

Earthquake is somewhat niche late gained tm if given to a fire type. The only situation it could get most use out of is against Blaine during post game. There is no reason to pit Typholysion against rock types if you plan your team coverages correctly.

There's nothing ironic. Both of them get enough things to feel strong through the whole game.
Like, Feraligatr gets a strong move, in Surf, earlier than the other two and is actually good in gen 4.
Typhlosion's Ember or Flame Wheel are shit but are relevant several times during the campaign (Bellsprout tower, Ilex Forest, Ice Path for example).
Meganium feels like a liability most of the time. Like, even exploration can be annoying since Zubat or Golbat are everywhere, and you're taking 2 turns+ to kill things the other starters would beat in 1.
Basically, it has no moment to shine and is a really generic Grass type.

Not even close. Has a type disadvantage against over half the gyms in Johto. Flying, Bug, Steel, Ice, Dragon, even the Ghost gym is all half poison. Not to mention Koga or Lance.

I like Meganium, but it isn't a very good option in Gen 2 specifically

I agree with you, but most useful in a casual run isn't the same as most useful in a speedrun. In Platinum speedrunners choose Chimchar because resets can guarantee HP grass for Roark.

Meganium unironically has the best time against Pryce. Since his whole team is weak to grass and slow as all hell.
Meganium line is also the tankiest of the starters so it definitely has the easiest time against Whitney's Milktake and can tank a couple outrages from Lance's Dragonite.
People shit on Meganium too much, it hurts. Also making it fairy type will make Meganium objectively worse.
