Yup. I've got bits of data that are over 10 years old. Started with ruby/sapphire and just kept migrating. Use my Crobat from Pearl as a kind of team-leader when getting up to level 100 in each game.

With save editing programs you can transfer the Pichu, but it will be like a regular one. Maybe you need to delete some special moves as well.

GB to GBA is impossible.
But some years ago there was an adapter in the market that allowed to backup the save data of a GB game into a computer.
Then you could inject that save into a Virtual Console game with the proper 3DS Homebrew programs.

My original Ruby Sceptile from 2003 is currently sitting in US with a shit ton of ribbons. Aside from that, nothing from my original file has survived. However, all of the Hoennmons in my "Living Dex" in Bank are from RSE and most of the Kanto ones are from FRLG.

I still have my starter from Platinum. I'd probably have my pokemon from Fire Red too but sadly I lost my copy of Pokemon Diamond before Platinum came out.

I'm extra pissed about the pokedex cut in Sword and Shield because i've had that infernape in every game and every region since gen 4 but thanks to the stupid fucking dex cut, there's always gonna be that one missing region. It was one of the biggest factors for me not buying Sword and Shield.

It had nothing to do with the link cable.

Pokémon generation and storage was entirely rehauled for Gen 3. The files from Gen 1 and 2 were no longer compatible.

Note how you need a special program to do so now. Now recall that the GBA didn't have apps, let alone internet access.

None of my pokemon went further than gen 5 because pokemon bank is horse shit I refuse to pay for

Some of them are still on my original platinum save, and some other ones are still on my BW saves, but I kind of wish they were still on gen 4.

The problem with gen 1 and 2 not being compatible with 3 was the fault of nintendo not planning for any sort of compatibility between a GB/GBC and a GBA in general. All three consoles use completely different link cables, GB games played on a GBA won't recognize or use GBA link cables, and I don't think a GBA in link mode has the access to directly modify the save of another GBA the same way how Colo/XD trading worked.

And I'm not saying it would be impossible even if they could somehow communicate, but compatibility spoofing and converting old pokemon into the new format would have been really taxing on a GBA game when most of the work was going into creating the new format in the first place. It's nothing like Sworshiel cutting half the dex because they broke their fucking model format out of incompetence.

I'd say the best best for gen 1/2 compatibility would have been if the gameboy player for gamecube had a special mode for grabbing pokemon out of gen 1/2 carts to turn them into mystery gifts that you could download onto gen 3 carts. It wouldn't happen otherwise.

You can't back transfer, even in PK Hex. The files aren't compatible.
Best you can do is Export as Showdown > Import as Showdown and then manually copy-paste the other data.

Maybe, but it would have had to use the gameboy player probably as trying to connect to a GBA playing a GB cart would have been a no-go. I think the Gameboy player had the potential for more options while running a GB cart.

But god imagine how much more expensive Box would be if it included a gen 1/2 to 3 converter.

Between 3 to 4 and 4 to 5, 3 to 4 is so much worse. Better not have fucked with the clock, or you're waiting 24 hours! This also means you can't use a different DS ever because the new one is probably different by a few seconds or was set for Daylight Savings.
Can only transfer 6 pokemon every 24 hours even if it doesn't cockblock you with anti-TT bullshit.

Save files could be plucked and plopped back in by third party devices and third party devices which edited the games connected into them also existed - literally things like Game Shark worked this way.

They could've easily made a device that you put into the GBA and inserted a GB cart into to pluck Pokémon from a save, spit out the converted version of them into the main program (even 6 at a time in memory would've been better than nothing if they didn't want to permanently store them there), and then reinserted them into an empty box slot into any of the GBA games placed in it afterwards.

I think a dongle attached to the memory card B port on the gamecube would make sense. Given all the Jhoto mons in Colo/XD it would make sense to do the transfer there.
