All they have to do is not just make it the stereotype, just add one wild card element to the design and you can usually turn it around, that's why the Ultra Worlds in spite of how content lacking they were, visually were quite impressive for the series because you got weird stuff like the Ultra Deep Sea, Ultra Desert, Ultra Plant, etc.
Also there's a distinct lack of synergy between the level design and the plot of these games, Kalos and Galar are both outright stated to have had large kingdoms existing yet there is fuck all evidence of their existence, you'd think given these places are based off France and England respectively there'd be more ruins incorporated into their environments effectively adding mini-dungeons, the closest you get to this is the Lost Hotel on Route 15 which isn't even a ruin but at least serves as a mini-dungeon. In Alola's case it's the distinct lack of iconography of the Tapus, for how core they are to Alolan culture you'd think their imagery and symbols to and of them would be more prevalent, instead most of the cities and towns seem to have been thought up in a void without consideration for the world that they inhabit especially ones like Paniola Town, Konikoni City & Malie City.
