Why are Red and Blue constantly near the top of "Greatest Video Game" lists when HGSS/BW2 are objectively better in every way?

It's just a popularity contest. Dark Souls was never mentioned when it came out but once they ported it to steam and reddit memed it up it started appearing on every "best games evur" lists.

R/B didn't review well when it came out and had mixed reception amongst gamers but then it got popular with kids.

I don't know.
I tried Quake many times but always end up leaving it after the 3rd or 4th level while I beat Quake 2 dozens of times and I would still play it again.
