What are your thoughts on mons that seem to be made (or to a lesser extent, modified) for specific characters? Such as how Obstagoon was made for Team Yell guys and Piers, or how Galardash had a Fairy type added to its Psychic type to boost the affiliation to Bede?

I don't care, as long as the Pokemon is fun to play and the design isn't so on the nose to be distracting (I don't think anything comes to that point, though the big black M on Camerupt's forehead is getting there)

And to some extent I'd rather trainers have thematically aligned Pokemon than just random Pokemon of their type (unless the juxtaposition is the point, e.g. Phoebe). I think Milo and Nessa having a cotton ball granny and a big snapping turtle is stupid as hell

they're fine but they shouldn't be at the expense of the fucking dex count, there should be a base line 100 Pokemon that are made for the generation and then you add character'mon on top of that, if you give each Gym Leader 2-4 lines that fit their character as well as at least one line for characters like the Professor, Antagonist, Elite Four, Champion, etc. you could easily push 150-200 Pokemon in each gen since a line can be (usually) 1-5 Pokemon.

It's been the case since gen 3. Almost all of Gen 7 Mons were based on characters. I don't mind it, it makes the character more memorable.

I don't really feel it for Obstagoon. It's a barbarian gnoll that uses a war paint motif as a vehicle for punk/KISS iconography. It's whole shtick is about stealing your shit and then saying "Fuck you, it's MINE!"

To be honest I'm pretty sure it's often the opposite, characters being made after the pokémon was designed, with a role and design that fit it.

This. Raihan was the worst example, he's a sandstorm themed gym and his ace is a fucking skyscraper just because it was a dragon type

But honestly if everyone always fit completely it'd lose its charm. It'd feel really forced.
