At the end of USUM Hau's story was just beginning - he was now honest with himself and decided to push himself to the limits and become the next Kahuna.

At the end of SwSh Hop is just a little bitch that lets his dream die because he was too busy smelling his brother's farts to train himself. He now aims to become a Professor which is was every failed trainer does to save face.

The dog didn’t even put up a fight though. It just let itself be caught and despite this hop went up and chucked the ball in the poor dog’s face. The LGPE trainer had a more noteworthy catch with their starter.

Is that why he never caught 151 creatures that live in his home region? Red and his grandson are a 10-year olds and he achieved more than Oak both as trainers and professors. And let me remind you that Red and Green have done jack shit compared to the other protagonists who've traveled thousands of light years and fought alongside their equivalents of Gods.

The way they force him into the box legendary plot without him earning it is specifically why I dislike him more than Hau. He got to do something more important than his brother, who he's less accomplished than, simply because he was hanging out with the player.

Being a great battler doesn’t mean you catch every Pokémon, those are two entirely separate goals. You only need a few great Pokémon to become the champion. Aside from that, Oak is the one who created the Pokedex and it wasn’t for finished until he was old, there’d have been no reason for him to go out and catch them all without the Pokedex to record data. There’s also the matter of gen 1 and 2’s lore treating Pokémon like unnatural creatures that began appearing in a world otherwise similar to our own. Steel types were considered a new and shocking discovery in the gen 2 games and the 100 Johto species were all considered new discoveries as well. In the scope of the original lore Oak did a lot to progress the field of Pokémon research.

I think the reason they wrote Hop to give up as a trainer is because they knew they couldn't have him follow you around in the DLC areas unless they forced those to be post-game only, since that would be interrupting his Gym challenge and clash with a lot of what he says during the game.

Hop beat the gym challenge and only lost to Sword/Shield bros because he was not feeling well, according to Sonia. He would have definitely won if he was 100%.
