They're based on the modern "Latin Alphabet" which is essentially just the English alphabet, due to classical latin having only 23 letters (missing J, U, W). Those letters were added later on in the middle ages and Renaissance, and the only major local alphabets that match the 26 unown are

English hacks just co-opted the definition of the Latin Alphabet to be the English one
