It's purely because it didn't have the name pokemon, take the same concept of defending a single town but make the main character a pokemon gym leader who defends it from large pokemon and challengers and it would have sold gangbusters.

Little Town Hero isn't a passion project developed by the A-team. Masuda explained during the Game Freak anniversary that he allows devs to make whatever side game they want as long as minimum 3 staff are prepared to work on it together. LTH is one of such games.

Little Town Hero isn't a platformer. It is a pretty basic RPG with some random marioparty-eqsue elements, but it can't even be said to be the best marioparty-esque rpg
