I only enjoyed him really in the first series mainly because he was such an asshole and the series had a very comedic tone so it made for a lot of fun lighthearted episodes. I didn't enjoy Hoenn as much and when Ash's original voice actor left the series became unwatchable for me.

I really appreciate how Ash is a normal kid (though they fucked that over with Aura autism and shit) that had to grow as a person in order to become a better trainer. He started off as a self-entitled little shit that expected everything would just go his way. He never trained his Pokémon, almost never had to struggle because he would get pity badges, and mostly got lucky because the mons he caught were inherently strong. His failures as a trainer played a direct role in losing the Indigo League by having him use his untrained Charizard that never listened to him. Its a great moment that punishes Ash for never actually working towards his goal.

After that, he progressively improved in every region (except Unova) which is reflected in his league position (except Unova). Got to Top 8 in Johto with all his mons, Got to top 8 in Hoenn with only new mons and lost to the winner, got to top 4 with all his mons in Sinnoh, got to Top 2 with only new mons in Kalos, and won with only new mons in Alola. With that said, I am ready for Ash to be retired even though I know he never will be. My ideal scenario would be for 2019 to have him use his Oakmons and beat a real champion and have the next series focus on a new character with occasional cameos from Ash. I know this won't happen, and we're probably not even going to get Oakmons, but it would be a great send off to a character that really has grown over these past 20 years even if a lot of people don't think so

He isn't completely stupid and uses interesting strategies/doesn't show hesitation so he actually seems badass. In 4, he even used his reserves (past pokemon) in the league which he's never done again. In 6, he was a shonen protagonist so everyone loved him.

You could argue that part of his failure in Unova stemmed from him experimenting by using a much larger team. He tried out using a bunch of mons; it didn't work, and he never used more than 6 mons again

6- little less strategic than 4 but powercrept every past iteration thanks to being some hero of legend
7- completely rewritten to be goofy generic anime protagonist

You clearly don't watch the anime if you think that's what Ash does. His whole shtick since at least Hoenn has been his tendency towards out of the box thinking that most trainers wouldn't think of. He does shit like using flare blitz underground to remove Toxic Spikes, grabbing a piece of a Stone Edge to use as a weapon, using Electroweb to change Pikachu's momentum, and much more. The anime has actually done a good job at showing Ash's style as a trainer

In Gen 4 ha made it to Top 4, beat 2 legendarys

In Gen 6, Ash was less of a butt monkey, and basically soft Red. Ash finally made it to the Finals of the Pokemon League, actually pushed a Champion back, everyone respects him, and he finally felt like the Leader of the group
