It is the only way they could make another rival that gets depressed from losing to you work (its pretty sad how common it is nowadays). They'll never do it as Pokémon has never let a good guy have actual flaws, but it would probably result in the most fleshed out rival to date.

Since they will never do it, I hope we at least get a rival that is actually ahead of you in the future. Maybe make rival battles where the player is designed to lose so that their eventual victory will be far more satisfying rather than having the player feel bad for kicking their rival into a depression

Too bad Hop is just copy-pasted Hau and SwSh doesn't have a villain because it doesn't have a plot aside from slogging around some short routes so you can finish your island trial... I mean gym challenge and then go back to grinding raids for a slim chance at a g-max

Hop's purpose is to be a tutorial.

He's irrelevant for us because we've been playing these games for decades, but for a kid who gets this for Christmas as their first-ever Pokemon game, it's not a bad way to teach them the ropes.

The problem is Hop doesn't grow from this point. He continually makes poor battle decisions. He's dumb, but he did serve a purpose.

If I had to rewrite SwSh the first change would have been Hop and you describe exactly what I would have done with him (or at the very least he would have ended up teaming up with Rose for power and then see the error of his ways blah blah)

I absolutely agree. This is the way we could've fixed Hop by making his "muh depression" plotline going to somewhere. That thing alone would've saved the entire SwSh shitty story.

It's a shame they will never do this and Hop's character is totally wasted.

Throw out the entire Rose and Eternatus plotline. Hop continues spiraling down after his loss from Bede. Having learned about the existence of the legendary dogs from you and Sonia’s research, he goes off on a quest to forcibly catch one of them as he gets obsessed over wanting more power. Then something something you catch the other dog and have a climactic battle to snap Hop out of it.
