I think the problem is literally just that digital animation seems less personable than hand-drawn categorically, I don't think it has anything to do with pokemon specifically.

Personally I really dislike the style of the new art, beyond the digital/hand-drawn change. I'm fine with digital art, but the new art looks chunky and round and unappealing to me.

While I prefer the 2017 rendition's artstyle the most, there's no denying those landscapes they did for the original make it work so well. Also I get they were sticking to a style with the 2020 version but it ends up worse off visually since Ash & Pikachu don't look nearly as beat up as they did in the original or 2017 version.

Movie 20 sucked ass, the first half is all about remaking iconic scenes from the main anime and the second half was a rushed story about ho-oh and marshadow, which ends with Marshadow just fucking off without any sort of conclusion

It was also one of the ugliest pokémon movies (followed by one of the best looking pokémon movies)

Hooh and the sky have excessive brightness. Rainbow is unnecessary and disrupts composition
Middle:
Traditional style holds visually pleasant to this day
Hooh dark contrasts and sparkles and pops out on sky
Right:
Orange hypersaturated eyesore devoid the image of it's colorfulness.
Hooh looks like geometrical shapes pull together instead of a bird

It's crazy how good the 1997 version looks in comparison. Screen 4 of the 2020 remake looks like absolute shit. From the shitty ground, the off-perspective, the digital mess, etc.

2017 looks like a remake. Nearly (But NEARLY!) the same art-style. With more colorfull. Shading and Lightning.
2020 looks just bad... 100% different art-style. Not so colorfull like 2017. And Ash big eyes... it confuse me

2017 vs 2020
look at the clouds. The clouds from 2017 looks here better than 2020.
