Not if you could use them to get any sort of advantage, gameplay-wise. Monster Hunter does it pretty well, since only fringe, purely-aesthetic gameplay elements, like emotes and songs played in your house, are affected by it, as opposed to something more central like armor transmogs or resources.

the pokemon defense force tm would defend this by saying it encourages putting more thought into team building. And of course you dont HAVE to buy the slots, you can beat the game with 3 pokemon.
