Played Pearl back when it first released as a kid and thought it was the best thing ever. Bought a used copy of Diamond recently and realized it’s agonizingly boring to play through. Nostalgia goggles is a real phenomenon.

Same. It was actually mind-boggling to me how slow surfing was in those games -- something I never remembered when playing them as a 12 year old. The games have so many glaring flaws. It'll be weird in 18 years when people start praising SWSH off nostalgia alone.

Diamond and Pearl really are shitty to play through now. I was a teenager when Gen 4 came out and buzzed through Platinum very quickly so I didn’t remember much at all apart from major features like legends and underground. I played Pearl again for the first time last year and it was sooo so boring. No online, no QOL changes, annoying pacing. The map was probably more complex than today’s games but it also felt more inconsequential since I knew I wasn’t going to be spending any further time in it, like walking throughly abandoned mall.

Weavile and Floatzel both effectively resist, and the rest have rock/fighting moves on top of rock polish. I knew there'd be an ice problem but including all my bros was the top priority

BW had a honeymoon period, followed by a lot of complaints about linearity, less difficult fights, rival characters stopping you every fight, etc.

I played it as a teen and I honestly feel sort of nostalgic for it now but I've played it recently enough to remember its flaws

But assigning any sentimentality to digital data (which, I will remind you, is erased and then copied whenever you transfer or trade a Pokémon, it is not actually transferred) is asinine.

Of course they can. But I see no value in putting energy into caring about literal vaporware. It’s like streaming media, or subscription music services. Sure they’re convenient, but they will never entirely replace Blu-rays/DVDs/CDs/records because, by nature, they’re not physical, and thus do not really exist. It’s why I only buy physical games if I’m able to, and I think it applies to Pokémon, too. Love Blastoise? Great. Buy a figure or a plush. Train one in every new playthrough of future games. But don’t develop an emotional attachment to Blastoise A from FireRed, as opposed to Blastoise B from HeartGold or Blastoise C from X. They’re just data, so they’re all the same.

You can transfer Pokemon from emulators in Gen 4/5 to cart easily.

Hell I raised a Charmander with Metal Claw and Rage on an emulator by trading it between the Gen 3 games, transferred that to Gen 4 then moved it over to my Gen 4 cart. Stuck it in bank and now it's in USUM.

I’m still me despite the fact I’ve had all my cells replaced over the course of my lifetime. What keeps it the “same thing” is merely my memory and abstraction holding it to be a consistent object, as with all objects in the universe. To break down this ability to define objects just because they de/reconstruct quickly is a mistake. My bro is still my bro because the data, although perhaps “reconstructed” is only done so as a product of the initiation of the transfer processes in the first place. It has a direct causal link from one step to the next and is recognizable as what I perceive to be my bro every step of the way.
