Pokemon is a franchise about cute, marketable mascots.
If you want more realistic monster-looking designs, try something else like Monster Hunter or Digimon.

Pokemon from the beginning was a franchise pushed extremely hard to sell merchandise and other supplementary products. Pokémon’s creatures were never really “hypothetical” or whatever bullshit you thought it was. It was always just a whimsical world where kids have magical “dogfighting” contests with strange creatures. If you want that ““““realism”””” play Monster Hunter and not a children’s bug catching franchise.

Yeah Mudkip looks like a very stylized, but still perfectly hypothetical creature that would be adjacent to the newt family. In fact Mudkip looks almost like a cute Pokémon rendition of the axolotl!
