I get that it's an MMO, but the most popular MMO's limit their trading/auction stuff to a point where it's more of a support to the game rather than mandatory. Plus, people get attached to their creatures - having to trade them around so often after putting work into them just sounds like it'd feel like a waste of time.
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised about hiring shills, which is a bit sad considering it could probably do just fine - to compare, Dauntless has done alright for itself and I barely saw anything about that, despite it just being a F2P MH clone with even more casual aspects.
I suppose it might be worth looking into when its out of early access? Or are the devs set on their kinda shit sounding design?
