Breeding for stats was fine in Gen 4 and the berry growing mechanics in XY are the best iteration of berries still
There's nothing wrong with having to collect rare alternative currencies like heart scales and bottle caps to use the move reminder or hyper training

Pokemon is a skinner box JRPG, it is fun to watch your collection grow and to build a strong power base by making numbers go up and to have impressive things that others don't

The Move Reminder being free is honestly a good change IMO even beyond competitive because it makes the function actually usable at all times. In SwSh you can catch something at Lv. 40 to 50 during the story and just check if it had any cool moves prior to your capture of it and use those if you want.

The lack of berry growing is awkward though, no doubt. I don't think the lack of its inclusion is a comp thing though, but rather I think they intended to turn berries themselves into a more limited resource since it was easy to stockpile them to absurd levels in previous games. I think just giving less patches to grow in than the 18 in PokePelago last gen would help limit them though.
