I was an early supporter of Temtem and the game is so much better than SWSH already. Worth the investment in my opinion. But I definitely have my gripes - some of the Temtem are plain ugly and the human designs are atrocious. I originally bought it just for the Platypus fakemon but it's surprisingly good.

The pokemon experience is so beloved by so many fans, that once we started to see gamefreak put out less and less, and water the games down over and over every year. Some chose not to buy the games, yet CRAVED that experience, and in this case, if there is a game that has amazing potential, and drive, they will take that over any gamefreak's shovelware at this point. Temtem has its problems, but as an Alpha, it has a lot to be surprised by.
And it is nice to see an indie game having just as much if not a better appeal than a AAA pokemon game, it makes me chortle just a bit.

It’s fun and I love the online mmo aspects of it. While it could use some improvements, it’s still in early access and the developers are very responsive to criticism. Also hopefully this game makes gamefreak actually consider implementing some new features and ideas that are good from this game, the co-op 2v2 battles are cool and the more people that support this, the more likely gamefreak will see potential in something like this and compete with it. It’s definitely a step forward in the monster collection/battle genre

True, Temtem has only been out for a day, but the fact that the overwhelming majority of people that played Alpha and Stress Test and now the people that bought into EA are saying that it's AT THE VERY LEAST more polished than Sword and Shield, the most recent games in the world's most profitable multimedia franchise, should tell you that it's at least not Mighty No 9-tier.

Simply put? It's just a 2D-era Pokemon game but without anything that justifies it. Why does the world look like it's composed strictly or artificial tilesets in a 3d game? Why is the MMO aspect so shallow when it was advertised so hard? How am I supposed to care about any of the monsters when they fail at giving a surface visual appeal with all the weak designs? What is the point of making a Pokemon clone while honestly failing to do anything genuinely new and engrossing?

It's just "Pokemon for someone that doesn't feel like owning Nintendo hardware", which means the rest of the core experience will be defined by how it sets it's presentation up, and in every way it's still inferior to Gamefreak's current game due to the artificial world that makes SwSh look like BOTW and with frankly ugly as fuck characters and monsters. Hell even the animations feel worse than Gamefreaks, I don't even think I saw monsters doing little idle motions or whatever.

When I ask for a Pokemon competitor I ask for something that can actualy turn heads away from it so that it makes Gamefreak have real competition, not something that makes me want to turn it off and go back to Pokemon. The closest thing to fun idea in the game to me is the Double Battle focus, but it is frankly another idea that feels aped from Pokemon's Gamecube adventures. Hell the entire game feels like it's full of meme requests from retarded internet people. Starters were blatantly the " fighting dark psychic" circle people dream of.

The problem with reviews of this game is that there's very little objectivity: a lot of it's fueled by animosity towards Sword/Shield and that's tinting their view. Stepping back from that, it's just a basic bitch JRPG that tries to lean on writing and a combat system that are nowhere near as fun or clever as the devs think they are.

The MMO aspect as well feels like more of an anchor on the game than a draw as well as it really isn't necessary and just leads to frustration as the servers keep crashing on you.

Still, it won't quite scratch the itch for most people. A lot of people are attached to the Pokemon themselves and not to the genre specifically. Even if it's fun for a while, you'd start to say like "I wish I could have [favorite Pokemon] on my team too." For better or worse, I don't think anything is going to be a replacement for Pokemon, there are only reasonably fun substitutes for those who are still waiting/hoping GF gets their act together at some point or for those who have just given up on Pokemon entirely. Temtem probably already be forgotten if SwSh were amazing games.
